Staff make a splash at Dragonboat Race
23 June 2017
Teaching staff from Edgbaston High School’s Senior Department made a big splash last weekend when they donned their paddles to join in with a Dragonboat Race at Edgbaston Reservoir.
13 teams took to the water in Chinese longboats in fancy dress to compete in the event, organised by the Rotary Club of Edgbaston. Two teams competed for EHS with the crew on each dragonboat made up of 10 rowers, a skipper and finally, a drummer, to beat the stroke and encourage the rowers on to the finish line. A large crowd of enthusiastic supporters lined the water’s edge to admire the range of fancy dress outfits and to cheer the teams on.
The day was a real success and even saw the two EHS teams make the ‘B’ Finals - resulting in a very close photo finish! Whilst the teams were pipped at the post they did not walk away empty handed and were pleased to be crowned ‘Fancy Dress Winners 2017’!
Through the race, Edgbaston High School has raised over £1,000 so far, with donations still coming in, to be split between Muscular Dystrophy UK, Little Hearts Matter and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice.
The teams’ fundraising effort was spearheaded by Lara Batchelor, Head of P.E. at Edgbaston High School. She said: “This event has been a huge success and we’re delighted to be able to support our chosen charities. We’ll be back to compete next year and training has already begun!”
