Gymnastics success for EHS

31 March 2017

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the EHS Gymnastics teams. The annual Birmingham Schools Gymnastics competition took place at EHS on Wednesday 8 March and involved three EHS Senior teams and one Prep team. The Under 12 Senior School team, consisting of Nyah Khera, Jaiya Sanghera, Mollie Hewison, Charlotte Miller, Jenny Reidy and Issy Birch, came away overall team champions with the Under 12 Prep team taking the Bronze medal. Individual successes went to Mollie Hewison who placed first overall, on vault and on floor.

The Under 14 team of Lauren Newton, Milly Mayo, Amber Lyttle, Rita Muttalib and Freya McGuire placed a fantastic third, taking a Bronze medal. The over 14 category involved many highly-experienced gymnasts but EHS did not disappoint, with the team of Ellie Hewison, Emily Irving, Louisa Maynard and Ruby Abbas placing overall first as a team! Individually, Emily Irving had a fantastic day, medalling first overall and first on vault. Ellie Hewison took first place on floor.

Over the weekend of 10-11 March, EHS was lucky enough to have two teams qualify for the Milano Team National Gymnastics Finals against school and club teams. Three experienced EHS U16 gymnasts, Ellie Hewison, Hannah Miller and Emily Irving, and four U13 gymnasts, Mollie Hewison, Charlotte Miller, Jenny Reidy and Issy Birch, competed at the event in Stoke. The girls performed individually on the floor and vault with their scores combining to give an overall team score. This was then combined with a group trio performance that requires precise synchronisation and a variety of group acrobatic balances. The U16 team placed 7th overall out of 24 teams, with the combined scores of the West Midlands teams placing them first in the region. A special mention should go to Emily Irving for her outstanding handspring on vault which saw her take the national title for her age group on this piece of apparatus, an incredible achievement! The U13 team also showed fantastic control, placing them 6th out of 24 national teams - the highest EHS have ever placed. A great weekend all round!

On Thursday 16 March, EHS attended the prestigious GSA Championships held at St Helen’s and St Catherine’s School, Oxford. The girls showed their commitment by beginning the day with a 6.15am meet at school. This was a challenging competition but all the girls gave of their best, with the Under 14 team of Lauren Newton, Issy Birch, Nyah Khera, Jenny Reidy and Charlotte Miller placing 5th as a team.

We would like to extend our thanks to our Coach Eliza Small and all of the EHS gymnastic parents who have given up their time this season to support the girls. We are incredibly proud of the dedication shown by the girls and it has definitely paid off with every member of the EHS gymnastics team showing success over the numerous competitions. We are already looking forward to seeing what successes we can achieve next year.
