EHS Presents: 'Lord of the Flies'

10 February 2017

The Senior School’s Edgbaston Youth Theatre group will be staging a dramatic performance of William Golding’s 'Lord of the Flies' next week on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 February. With a cast of 15 students with many more girls and staff working behind the scenes in stage management, sound, lighting, special effects and makeup, the team have worked incredibly hard to bring the production to life.

Mr Lane, Head of Drama and Theatre Studies, comments: “The themes in the play are as relevant today as in Golding’s first edition of the book published in 1954 and Williams' first stage production in 1991.

“At its core, it remains a tale of truth, of the boundaries we hold as humankind, of how young people can behave in a world void of adult supervision. The idea of young people exerting authority over others has been imprinted into memories of school days. However, in recent years, particularly with the rise of social media, the general population have become increasingly aware of its scale and severity coupled with the damage it can cause.

“It may seem strange to stage this play in a girl's school. Gender should not set actors apart or determine ability …… this production is very much about girls, made by girls and speaking to girls. The cast are not girls trying to act as boys, they are girls behaving like girls that find themselves in a microcosm where their morality is tested.”

Performances take place on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 February in the Octagon, starting at 7.00pm. Tickets are still available so reserve your spaces now:
