Portsmouth Ahoy for the Netball Tour

11 March 2016

On Friday 4 March, the Year 6 Netball Squad set off with Mrs. Aston, Miss. Roye and Mrs. Woodfield for the annual Prep Netball tour to Portsmouth. All 16 girls were excited to be wearing their special green tour hoodies and looking forward to a packed weekend of their favourite sport.

After a lunch stop at the Services, the group arrived at their destination mid-afternoon. They were soon checked into the hotel and ready to walk into the city for a fun game of ten-pin bowling before returning to Southsea for a walk on the beach before dinner. After a lovely meal, the girls enjoyed a netball quiz and designing their own perfect netball dress - with some fantastic designs.

An early breakfast started Saturday morning before a short walk to St. John's College where both the 'A' and 'B' teams were playing in a netball tournament against other local schools. There were some highly contested games and some great play from all teams however, after a particularly thrilling final must-win game, the EHS Year 6 'A' team were announced as tournament winners.

Our hosts provided us with a delicious lunch of pizza and chips and then the group headed back to the hotel to shower and change, ready for an afternoon at Gunwharf Quays. First the girls enjoyed the view from the top of the Emirates Spinnaker Tower - many were even brave enough to walk on the glass floor! Then came the much-talked-about shopping trip including a doughnut treat. With Mother's Day the next day, many presents were purchased and the girls responded very positively to having a little more responsibility and independence.

On Saturday evening Miss. Roye had everyone engaged in a series of hilarious team games! Each girl on the tour was then presented with her tour award - a little reminder of just some of the happy memories of the tour.

Sunday morning was a more leisurely start with a relaxed hotel breakfast before we returned to St. John's College for a netball 'mix-in' session. Our EHS players were combined into new teams with girls from our host school and the new teams playing a round-robin tournament of games. It was lovely to see everyone enjoying their netball and trying out some new positions, despite it being a chilly morning. All too soon the tour was over and, having said our thank yous, a weary minibus of girls and staff headed back to Birmingham.

Without a doubt, the girls will be talking about the tour for many, many weeks to come! They were an absolute credit to the school and the staff thoroughly enjoyed the weekend too.
