the weekly newsletter from Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress
08 July 2016
We began the week with Changeover Day when we welcomed new pupils joining us in September into school. Everyone then spent an hour, in the morning, with their new teacher and classmates.
The rest of the week has been a theatrical one. Monday afternoon saw the dress rehearsal of the Year 6 production in the Octagon. All girls and staff from Reception to Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed the performance and left the Octagon singing their favourite tune. You can see more Aladdin images in the separate article.
On Tuesday we were pleased to have a visit from the Hobgoblin Theatre company who entertained us with a dramatic tale of The Legend of Arthur. This followed our Annual School Picnic held on the school playing fields.
The evening finally dawned for the members of Year 6 who had been working eagerly for their end of term production, ‘Aladdin Trouble.’ There was much excitement all round which the girls channelled into their performances to give the audience some stunning entertainment.
Some of the Year 6 girls had another drama to solve in their Murder Maths Session. The girls were given mathematical clues to solve to work out the murder at the crime scenes. Three different mysteries were solved and Chardonnay was named as the main killer.
Wednesday afternoon was exciting for Year 2 as they filed to the pool for their first Inter House swimming gala. There were showcase lengths and widths first so that the girls could demonstrate their developing skills. These were followed by many relay races including a variety of different swimming aids. We are pleased to announce that, despite being the smallest team, Curie House were the worthy winners having not won the event since 2007.
Whilst Year 2 girls were swimming Year 1 girls enjoyed a French Feast as an end of term treat to extend their Geography topic based on countries of the world. They tucked into a variety of French foods whilst listening to French songs. They decorated French flags and wore these on headbands. A ‘bon moment’ was had by all!
The week ended with a number of farewells. We began with our Leavers’ Assembly on Thursday afternoon when we reflected on Year 6 girls’ time at school. We were joined by all girls in Prep and our Year 6 parents who we are sure all hold their own memories of their daughters’ time at EHS.
On Thursday evening we said farewell and thank you to two members of After School Care. Mrs Audley is leaving Westbourne After Care although she is continuing to work in Year 1C and Mrs Hancox is retiring from Prep After Care after 14 years. We thank them both on behalf of all the girls they have cared for and entertained.
The academic year was rounded off at our final assembly of this year when we said farewell to girls and staff leaving us. This included Mrs Barton, our Prep Secretary of 28 years and Mrs Ferguson, Year 4 teacher who are both retiring. We wish them both well in their retirement and hope we will see them at future Prep events. Enjoy the rest ladies!
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a lovely holiday. Good luck to girls who are moving on and I look forward to seeing everyone else on September 7 unless you are joining us for Holiday Club when I am sure I will see you out and about in the grounds.
