Future accountants attend KPMG Young Professionals Day

Sixth Form

22 September 2017

Two Year 13 students have been selected to take part in a Young Professionals Day hosted by accountancy firm KPMG. The girls share their experiences with us ...

On Tuesday 19 September, we headed to KPMG's Birmingham office to participate in their Young Professionals Day. After completing a rigorous application process, 15 people were chosen for the day, some of whom had travelled from outside Birmingham, such as London and Cheltenham.

We were excited to experience a day at one of Europe's largest Accounting firms. The first half of the day was spent talking to the Chairman and Senior Partners about the various aspects of the firm including tax, audit and advisory. It was a great chance to enquire about the ways in which the partners advanced in their chosen fields and the endless possibilities a career with the organisation would provide.

Later on we discussed the application process for a job at KPMG, both on the KPMG360° leavers apprenticeship programme and the postgraduate route, as well as the key employability skills they look for in a candidate.

Following a tour of the building, we finished the day off by working in groups for a Dragon's Den style competition. The task was to advise a panel of judges on the best business to invest in from a selection of three. We performed a SWOT analysis and considered all the financial data before making a brief presentation on our investment recommendation. Laura's group won 'Best Presentation' for their analysis of both financial and commercial data.

We had a brilliant experience participating in the day and it has further increased our enthusiasm for a job in accountancy, hopefully working at one of the big four professional services companies in the future.
