Careers Education, Information and Guidance (CEIAG)
Careers Education is an integral part of life at EHS.We pride ourselves on the inspirational and impartial high quality guidance that girls receive throughout their time at the school. This guidance is delivered through a coherent programme of activities which are designed to inform, inspire and motivate the girls, prepare them for work, and help them to understand where different education and training choices can take them in the future.
Our careers provision is available to all girls from Year 7 upwards and Careers Education forms an important element of the PSHEE programme in each year group. During lunchtimes and study periods all girls can access the resources in the Careers Room and have the opportunity to investigate university courses and discuss their future plans with the Head of Careers. Impartial careers advice is offered through 1:1 interviews which are available to girls throughout the academic year. There is a simple booking system and interviews can be requested by any girl, parent or teacher. We offer information on the full range of training and education options and career pathways to help the girls make informed choices about their future so that they can reach their full potential. We also have two dedicated UCAS advisors who work alongside the Head of Careers. This means that the girls have structured and personalised guidance throughout the UCAS application process and beyond.
Advice is given on the basis of realistic expectations, AS grades, comments from subject teacher reports and knowledge of your daughter’s aptitudes and character. Mock interviews are arranged for students who have interviews at a university, either with a member of the teaching staff, or someone with a particularly relevant background from outside school. Oxbridge candidates are prepared. All girls can expect to receive induction, advice, support and guidance on University and Higher Education entry as well as information regarding gap year opportunities. Some students take advantage of the scholarships or sponsorships available for particular activities or voluntary work which they undertake during school summer holidays at the end of Year 12 or after A Levels in Year 13.
In-house support for pupils is combined with advice and guidance from independent and external sources. We have an extensive programme of external speakers coming into school and have also developed a mentoring scheme whereby girls can get invaluable advice and support from a professional in their chosen career. Last year our girls enjoyed talks from a range of guest speakers representing airlines, law firms, the Army, Gap year placements, apprenticeships and individual universities, to name but a few. Speakers from a variety of universities will continue to be available to Sixth Form over the course of the next academic year to give an idea of the variety of courses available. We have also begun a programme of careers themed assemblies and ‘Breakfast Question and Answer’ sessions in order to allow more girls to find out about a huge range of opportunities available to them. We will also be introducing sessions on financial capability and work related learning to our programme of activities.
We aim to provide any girl with a mentor in their chosen field in order to help with work experience placements and/or university applications. We feel that this is an area which is becoming increasingly important in ensuring that our girls get the highest level of support to enable them to pursue their chosen professions. We have excellent links with our EHS alumni and actively encourage Old Girls to visit the school to give an ‘insiders’ account of what to expect from university or a particular job. Through the Old Girls’ Association (chaired currently by Anna Stanley) we can normally find a link in every field possible.
