From Student to Sculpture
26 April 2024
Milly in Year 10 had the unique opportunity to model for a life-sized bronze sculpture created by Harborne-based sculptor Hannah Northam. Northam was commissioned by her former school, Strathcona in Melbourne, Australia, to create a sculpture commemorating the school's 100th anniversary. The artwork features two schoolgirls sitting on a bench - one dressed in a traditional Victorian schoolgirl uniform, the other in modern attire.
Milly shared her experience of the five-month process involved in bringing the sculpture to life. "Initially, I sat for photographs and measurements, and then Hannah began constructing the sculpture. It started as a wire frame, which she then built up and shaped into an impressive clay model," Milly explained. "The sculpture was then sent to a foundry for bronze casting before its final journey to Australia."
Milly expressed her enthusiasm for being part of the project. "It was amazing to watch the sculpture evolve through its various stages and to see Hannah's artistic skills in action," she said. "I loved being part of such a unique experience – even if I did have to sit still for long periods of time!"
