Mrs Macro's Welcome Back Message

Westbourne | Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form | Parents

08 September 2023

The summer sunshine may have arrived a little too late for maximum enjoyment, but all our pupils came back to school this week full of energy and enthusiasm and ready to embark on the exciting year ahead.  After congratulating our outgoing Year 13s and Year 11s on their respective results in the summer we look forward to working with all pupils this year to help them achieve their potential.

In a year when we returned to pre-covid grading, it was fantastic that over 40% of grades for Year 13 were the top grades A*/A, and 76% A*-B. This resulted in over 90% of our cohort gaining places at their university of choice. It is also exciting that several of our girls are now choosing the apprenticeship degree route and are embarking on their careers, whilst studying for a top degree.  We wish them well as they begin the next part of their journeys, and we know that they go with the determination, resilience, and academic skillset to be successful. At GCSE it was equally impressive that the girls achieved 62% of the top grades 9, 8 and 7. A third of students achieved 10 or more of these top grades. We are excited to see what this cohort will achieve in the next two years in the Sixth Form.

Along with the teachers that we said goodbye to at the end of the Summer Term, over the summer holidays we also said goodbye to Mr Proctor, English and Mrs Gutzmore, Senior Science Technician, both of whom are leaving EHS to pursue other interests. They leave with our gratitude for their years of service and the countless students that they have helped.

We welcome several new members of teaching staff to our community:

Mrs Chambers - Psychology
Mrs James - Biology
Mr Wengraf - Physics
Miss Harris - Dance
Mrs Cole - Textiles
Miss Thapar - Humanities
Mrs Olivetti - Classics
Mr Gill - Science Technician
Mr Man - Science Technician

The teachers of EHS are unstinting in their commitment to the students, and from our youngest to our oldest they take the time to get to know the individual and work with them to develop their strengths, help them flourish and move forward with confidence and enthusiasm. Every visitor to our school comments on the same thing: the joy, happiness and sense of purpose that emanates from all our students.

As I start a new academic year (my 29th!) I find my sense of anticipation for the year ahead is undiminished. A student once asked me if teaching was boring. Her rationale was that each year we start again and go through the same courses. I explained to the student that I have never seen teaching in that light because a school is made up of students who have questions, opinions, ideas, energy, wonder, and that is a wonderful mix that makes each year so very different and exciting. As a teacher you have the privilege of seeing students learn something that they didn’t previously know; it is akin to seeing things for the first time again yourself. Teaching is never boring, and, as ever, I cannot wait to see what will be achieved by all this year.
