Storytellers Supreme

This week has been National Storytelling Week, across the country. This annual event is a celebration of the power of sharing stories. Stories teach us about the world, they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes, they help us to relax and escape and they help develop essential literacy skills.

Year 3 was the first year group to demonstrate their storytelling skills in their assembly performed for parents just over a week ago.

This week our Year 5 girls have entertained their parents in assemblies with the telling of fables, in the style of Aesop. They have studied this genre during English lessons and have all written a version of their own. Several stories were selected from each class and these were performed by groups of girls working together to bring the tales to life. We really enjoyed their use of descriptive language, the humour and their understanding of the human characteristics given to the animals.

This was a most enjoyable way to begin three of our days this week and demonstrated well the power of storytelling.

This week has also been a whirlwind of creativity in Year 6 as they delved into "The Highwayman" poem! They were transported into the world of moonlit heists, created embodied mysterious strangers with freeze frames, and gave life to the verses through performances. But, there was more too!

They penned heart-wrenching diary entries, created a thrilling radio broadcast of the highwayman's daring escapades, and let their artistic talents shine with some stunning artwork. And they didn't stop there! Brace yourselves for alternative endings that will leave you on the edge of your seats!

Storytelling and writing is clearly thriving in the Prep School and has fully captivated the range of appreciative audiences throughout this special week.
