This Week in Westbourne
08 March 2024
In addition to dedicating Thursday to World Book Day themed activities, alongside many schools in the country, there has much else to focus on in Westbourne this week.
One theme in Nursery this week has been Sing a Song of Sixpence. The girls made crowns for the king in his counting house, they made bread and honey for the queen in the parlour, and they helped the maid to wash and hang out the clothes. They also made some blackbird pies!
In specific areas of the curriculum for their writing practise they have been looking at curved lines and in Physical Education sessions the girls have played lots of fun parachute games.
Reception girls listened to the story of Handa's Surprise, by Eileen Browne, in their Creative Writing lessons. Pupils are becoming more confident with their independent writing skills and enjoyed writing sentences about the story afterwards. Handa's Surprise incorporates different cultures into the classroom and pupils always enjoy listening to it. Girls also painted lovely pictures of fruit to accompany this story.
On Wednesday, after presenting their Mother’s Day assembly to parents, the girls demonstrated their artistic talents by drawing observational flower pictures. The sun was shining so they set off walking around the school grounds looking for flowers. In the classroom, girls painted beautiful tulips and daffodils and the results were amazing.
In Mathematics lessons, Reception girls have mastered 'missing number' calculations, where they have to consider two numbers that add together to make the given number. This is quite a tricky concept but this was easily mastered using practical items. They have also been adding together a range of coins in their Topic work.
In French lessons, girls learnt about French culture and landmarks. They were fascinated by the Eiffel Tower and painted silhouettes and constructed 3D models to accompany this.
We are sure parents will enjoy viewing this work which is on display in the classrooms when they drop in to visit on Friday morning.
