This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

19 April 2024

In Nursery, pupils have been playing ‘getting to know you’ games to help our new girls to settle in. They have also enjoyed using the animal footprint stamps in the sand and trying to identify which animal it belongs to. They have also been busy in PE completing a circuit by moving in different ways in the hall and throwing, catching and kicking the balls in the garden. Also, for self-registration on arrival in the mornings the girls’ photos have now been removed and they are successfully recognising their names.

Kindergarten girls have been busy in and out of the classroom, with swimming having begun this week.  They have been focusing on the letter sound 'l', and are becoming more confident in hearing the initial sounds in words and are quick to compile a class set of words beginning with a certain letter. They have written about lemons, lions and lollipops where they enjoyed thinking of describing words for their very own lollipop designs. In numeracy, they have been carefully counting out spots for ladybirds, ordering lollipop numbers and carefully counting two sets of objects to make a total. Girls also explored length as they enjoyed doing some measuring to determine the longest and shortest of objects.

In art sessions, the children made lion masks and ladybird pictures in the shape of the letter L and the final activity of the week was making lemonade. This wasn't everyone's favourite but the girls worked hard to squeeze all the lemon juice themselves!

Reception girls have been learning more about 2D and 3D shapes and just cannot believe how many shapes there are all around us! They ventured out into the playground and found huge cylinders, spheres, cubes and cuboids. In the classroom they created lovely 2D patterns using diamonds, hexagons, triangles and trapeziums. They have continued to learn number bonds to 10 and, to help us remember, have coloured  'Number Bond Rainbows' as well as stacking cubes to show number bonds to 5.

Reception Topic work this week has demonstrated the use of technology. They compared farms in the past to farms of today and discussed how technology and transport have changed farming over the years. They also learnt how to program Bee Bot robots which taught girls the importance of sequences and accurate instructions. The vet's area of the classroom is proving to be very popular and Reception pupils will be learning how to look after their toy pets this term.

Reception were invited to the Year 6 production of "Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies" in the Octagon on Tuesday. The girls enjoyed watching the lively production and were fascinated with the orchestra, which they found very entertaining. It was great to be able to visit the theatre without leaving school.  Thank you Miss Robinson for inviting us, we had a wonderful time!

A wealth of opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom for all girls in Westbourne this week.
