This Week in Westbourne

Even in our shorter week before breaking up for half term the girls in Westbourne have still been very busy, making the most of every day.

In Nursery, following our special day in support of the charity ‘Wear it Pink’ last week, the girls’ studies have been focused on the popular colour. To further develop their fine-motor development and hand eye co-ordination the girls have manipulated tweezers to collect pink pompoms and put them into pink cases and used dabbers to put pink sprinkles onto ice-creams.

Playing Kim's game with a selection of pink items has been an enjoyable way to encourage good memory skills. The Nursery girls enjoyed closing their eyes and then working out which item the teacher had removed from the tray. Making pink milkshakes and Angel Delight to share made snack time a treat too.

There was also an adventure for Nursery this week when they visited Prep to see the swimming pool, Mrs Hartley’s Office and a number of classrooms and lessons. The older Prep girls were delighted to welcome their visitors.

Exploring autumn, both inside and outside of the classroom, has been a focus this week in Kindergarten. They began talking about signs of autumn and what they might see at this time of year. Using their mathematical skills the girls then ordered numbers and matched groups of autumn items to corresponding numerals.

Natural science was a theme too as the children recycled cups to create squirrels and used leaves they collected to make leaf hedgehogs. They found it interesting looking closely at pinecones, conkers, acorns and leaves using magnifying glasses. The girls took time to write about their findings and looked forward to eating the yummy hedgehog bread rolls they had made!

In Reception girls have been learning about the Festival of Diwali in their Religious Education lessons and have enjoyed modelling beautiful Diwali outfits in the classroom.

Using their Mathematics skills, girls have been decorating birthday cakes made of playdough. They recorded how many different coloured candles were placed on their cake which encouraged their writing skills as well as accurate counting skills.

The outdoor session last Friday was all about snails! Girls made little snails using conkers for the shell and clay for the body. Afterwards, girls heard the story of The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson. This story is celebrating a 20 year anniversary this year.

We hope everyone enjoys their break which they deserve after so much hard work this half term.
