Budding Designer is Competition Winner
07 July 2023
Congratulations are in order for Fashion and Textiles student Ria in Year 12 who has been announced as the winner of this year’s national WOOL4SCHOOL design competition.
Students were challenged to design a unique outfit that blends both old and new, featuring pre-loved items and merino wool.
Her winning collection, named ‘Waste Kills!’, aimed to enhance the importance of upcycling and the drastic effects of the overuse of landfills. In particular she decided to focus on elephants feeding on landfill, as this unique and endangered species is constantly undergoing threat due to the overuse of human disposal.
It compromised a full playsuit garment inspired by elephants, combined with knee high straight boots. It is a runway style piece, in order to make a statement and increase consumer awareness of the effects of fast fashion.
The competition was judged by British fashion designer Saul Nash. Saul was thoroughly impressed, complementing Ria on her ability to design couture evening wear, her understanding of the client and her design abilities.
As part of the prize she has won prizes including a short course at the University of the Arts London, an XP-Pen Graphic Tablet, and a one year subscription to Vogue magazine.
Her award-winning work is on proud display in the Textiles room.
Well done, Ria!
