Live on BBC Radio 5

Sixth Form

22 September 2023

This week, a group of Year 12 and 13 students were invited by BBC Radio 5 to join them on an episode of ‘Teen23’, a broadcast that revolved around student finances and what it is like to be a teenager.

The episode began with presenter Nihal Arthanayake and Martin Lewis, ‘Money Saving Expert’, introducing themselves and we immediately delved into the Q&A part of the show. The audience and some EHS pupils were asking Lewis about advice on savings; whether we should start saving or enjoy university life. Lewis expressed his frustration at the lack of funding in certain schools with passion and concern. He ended his segment with an interactive question in which he got the audience to help Nihal answer. Unfortunately, the audience led Nihal in the wrong direction, however, as an audience we are now aware that if you buy clothes from a shop and get home and realise you bought the wrong size, you actually have no legal right to return the clothes.

Nihal Arthanayake was then later joined by Beth Calverley (founder of the Poetry Machine) who helped Arthanayake ask the audience what they feel friendships mean to them and what the beauty of being a teenager is. After that eye-opening section we heard a local live band play an original song.

Calverley and Arthanayake were then intrigued and curious about how long we use our phones for and the impact it has on us. Following many anecdotes of screen times ranging from 6-10 hours a day, several people concluded that their phones may have taken control over them.

The episode was concluded by another beautiful song by the local band and then Calverley read the poem she had been writing throughout the episode, including things people told her throughout the episode, which was very moving.

The Year 12 and 13 students who attended the trip thoroughly thank Ms Campbell, Mrs Parsons, Mr Smith, Ms Stephenson, Mrs Smith and Ms Purewal for accompanying us on the trip and giving us this opportunity.
