What a busy last week of term, which started with our Carol Service held for the second year in the Octagon. We were delighted to see so many parents and friends to share in our seasonal celebration and grateful for the £265 raised for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This will be added to money collected from the ‘decorate a bauble’ project.
On Tuesday, we held the first of our Celebration Assemblies which began with a piano solo from Davica Roles playing ‘Last Christmas.’ We were joined by Mrs Macro who announced the winner of the Year 6 Christmas card competition to design a card to be used as the official school card for this year. Mrs Macro had chosen Katerina Thomas’s design for her card but the standard was so high that a second winner was chosen to represent the Prep School. Mrs Hartley chose Ava Bullock’s card and both girls were presented with their professionally printed cards.
We also congratulated a number of girls on their Challenge Board entries and Mrs Macro enjoyed presenting their certificates and finding out more about their Independent Learning entries. Charlotte, our Head Girl, presented Mr Robson with a farewell gift as he is leaving us this term to move to another post. We wish him well.
Following a delicious Christmas lunch, the afternoon gave us the opportunity to build our coin snake trails and to marvel at the amounts collected from girls who had made pocket money pledges to help at home with tasks to raise some money. Our chosen charity will be announced early next term but we have a very pleasing £598 to donate. Well done to all girls who took part in the pledges.
Our first Inter-House event took place on Wednesday with the General Knowledge Quiz. The winning House this year was Curie, although the results were close. Year 3 have been developing their general knowledge too, and voicing their opinions as they have been tasting, evaluating, designing and making fruit salads this week.
Thursday dawned with a Christmas theme. It began with the ‘Wreath Walk’ when all girls in Prep visited each classroom door and voted for their favourite class Christmas decoration on each floor. More pupil voice in action! There are prizes for the winning classes. This walk was followed by another as, everyone was able to visit Westbourne to see the live reindeer who were visiting EHS. Year 1 also met Father Christmas and all that was missing was the snow! There were parties all afternoon.
We ended our festive week and the term with a second Celebration Assembly. We had much to celebrate with the presentation of a number of individual awards to Zoe Dias for her swimming and trampoline achievements, to Nell Paton for taking part in Revolution Gymnastics Internal competition, to Florence Raistrick for her Introduction to Horse Care accomplishment and to Diya Mehan for success in swimming and in becoming an Apprentice Science Boffin. Our congratulations to them all.
We also presented the House Quiz Cup, Certificates of Achievement and drew the winners of the Courtesy Counts awards. The class winners of the door wreath competition were announced as was the total raised for Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the coin snake trail results. There was a staff version of a school nativity play to entertain the girls and we ended the term with the customary three cheers guided by the Head and Deputy Head girls.
We wish everyone a good holiday break and a merry Christmas and look forward to seeing everyone back on January 9, 2024.
Mrs Sally Hartley
