This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

22 March 2024

Spring and Easter have been the themes across the three Westbourne year groups this week in Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception and everyone has been happy to see some sunshine and warmer weather.  All girls have engaged in a range of Art and Craft activities including special cards featuring chicks and bunnies and lots of Easter fun.

In Nursery, in addition to looking for signs of spring around school, the girls have been using information books and the internet to learn about animals and their babies and the different names which we give to them.  They have enjoyed learning some new circle games in Westbourne hall this week and in their weekly cooking session they made Easter shaped biscuits ready to decorate at our workshop with their families.

Kindergarten girls have made Easter baskets and are hoping to be able to fill them with a special treat or too!  They have used Easter as the theme for Mathematics and Literacy too. Girls have been adding two groups of eggs together to find a total and have also been introduced to the concept of subtraction. This has been done alongside reinforcement of correct number formation. The children have enjoyed listening to a range of spring and Easter stories too and in literacy lessons the focus has been on retelling some of these.

Kindergarten girls have very much enjoyed their balanceability lessons over the course of this term and have made amazing progress with their balance, confidence and steering! They look forward to building on these skills further next term as well as starting swimming lessons!

Spring was in the air in Reception this week too, and on Monday they visited the Botanical Gardens to look for signs of spring.  The sun was shining and the blossom was out and there was so much to see.  EHS is very lucky to have these beautiful grounds to walk around right next door to our classrooms.

In Literacy lessons, Reception wrote about their spring walk and all the beautiful flowers and wildlife they observed the day before.  They learnt about one more and one less in Mathematics and focused on numbers up to 20, then used the large square number mats to count accurately, all the way up to 35!

On Thursday, as part of the Year 1 transition programme, Reception girls visited the Year 1 playground for an Easter Egg Hunt.  This was a great opportunity for Reception girls to meet their future teachers and become used to the Prep school environment.

The highlight of everyone’s week was definitely spotting the Easter bunny carrying a large basket of Easter eggs!
