This Week in Westbourne
22 September 2023
We are extremely pleased to see how well the girls have settled and how independently they are entering school in just the second full week back at school. This is the case from Nursery to Reception.
In Nursery the week has focused on the colour red. The girls have explored red apples using their different senses. They have printed with them using red paint and have planted apple pips which they are looking after to see if they will grow. Their sensory play involved red gloop which was great fun and they finished the week making pizzas. By playing matching games they have also been developing visual discrimination skills.
We also enjoyed meeting Nursery parents this week for a workshop about the year ahead and look forward to welcoming them to further events during the year.
This week in Kindergarten the children have been exploring all things 's'. They have looked at shapes with a focus on squares in particular. They created shape birds using only squares. Did you know that if you cut a square in half diagonally it gives you two triangles? Our girls do!
Kindergarten have also enjoyed their introduction to Jolly Phonics this week, and together they have thought hard about words that begin with s and have even made fabulous attempts to write the words themselves. A highlight was PE where they were challenged to move like different animals, for example snakes, slugs, snails, spiders, squirrels and sloths!
Reception girls have also had another busy week. In their Creative Writing lesson, they heard the story of The Little Red Hen and wrote a sentence by copying from the board. Later in the day they made red hen masks which are now on display and brighten up the classroom.
The same story was used as an introduction to their Topic work, of Food, by finding out how bread was made. Girls took great delight in trying different breads from all
around the world and noted their favourite ones. There was Mexican tortilla, Indian naan, Greek pitta, Jewish bagel, French baguette, French croissant, British white loaf
and brown loaf to choose from.
At the end of last week Reception girls made the most of the warm weather and went to the outdoor classroom to play on the apparatus and this week there is great excitement as
they will be having their first swimming lesson.
