Visiting Verulamium

Senior School

23 June 2023

Last week the Classics department took Year 8 to St Albans, where the ancient Roman town Verulamium once stood. After a sunny picnic the girls enjoyed a carousel of activities learning about Roman Britain.

The girls were excited to handle real artefacts from the Roman world; ranging from kitchen utensils to make up palettes, they enjoyed making connections to the daily life of the Romans. Some of the girls even volunteered to dress up as Romans as a means of understanding the social hierarchy.

Up next was a visit to the theatre remains and bathhouse mosaic. The girls were fascinated to learn about the various forms of entertainment and some of the girls even saw a live performance of a modern play in the theatre.

The third activity was a visit to a museum where they could see a variety of mosaics, artefacts and information that contributed to life in Roman Britain. These mosaics are some of the best preserved and the girls loved the patterns, colours and stories.

Everyone had such a lovely day and the girls are well-placed for reflecting on life in Roman Britain now we’re back at school.
