Showcase Celebrates Creativity

This week, the Senior School held an Art Showcase to celebrate all the fantastic work that has been produced by our young artists so far this year.
As well as artwork placed on easels around the Octagon, there was a show reel, expertly put together by Mr Hunt and the Year 12 Graphics students, to demonstrate the breadth of work produced by all years, encompassing all areas of the Art department.
Before watching the video show reel, the Art scholars introduced the themes and projects which have been explored this academic year.
Alma and Kiren shared insight into Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) work. As well as working in the areas of Ceramics, Graphics and Fine art, pupils in KS3 have completed a series of observation drawing tasks in order to develop their technical skills. Alongside this, they have submitted a series of art history assignments which has involved delving into the world of artists such as Gainsborough, Monet, Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo.
Projects have focused on a diverse range of themes:
• Year 7 have produced ceramic kites and balloons, acrylic sea-life paintings and striking posters created in Adobe Photoshop.
• Year 8 have created detailed natural form drawings and paintings, created ceramic figurines of women from different cultures and produced digital animal
illustrations.
• Year 9 have created striking posters for both travel and the Olympic games, drawings and paintings of cakes and created ceramic hanging plant pots.
Lily and Flora then talked about the work in Key Stages 4 & 5 (Years 10-13). Artists in Years 10-11 have focused on formal elements, developing their practical skills through observations of sea life and natural form. To complement traditional techniques, students have created a contemporary book cover design using Adobe Photoshop in which they have been influenced by graphic designers and Illustrators as well as exploring the possibilities of Adobe After effects for animation. Students in Year 11 have designed their own projects and become more independent in their decision-making.
Key Stage 5 encompasses a higher level of independence, reflection and technical understanding. Students have worked in the areas of Fine art and Graphic design to create exciting, powerful and well thought out responses to their chosen theme.

“Some of you are just at the start of your Art journey at school while others are coming to the end, and we would like to wish every success to artists in Year 11 and 13 who have just completed their GCSE and A level art exams. Congratulations!
“We’d also like to thank our Year 13 Art scholars, Alma and Kiren, and we wish them luck in the next stage of their creative careers studying Architecture and Fashion Art Direction.”
