This Week in Westbourne

Even though this week has been shorter, Westbourne pupils have packed a great deal into it!
The theme in Nursery this week has been squares and cubes. In art work they printed squares of different sizes and made squares by gluing lolly sticks. They also looked at the work ‘Concentric Square’ by Frank Stella and then created their own version. The pupils put coloured water into a tray which was put it into the freezer and they made predictions about what may happen. The next day they painted pictures using the paint ice cubes.
In Mathematics different sized cubes were built outside and the girls built towers of cubes to match given numerals. They had lots of fun strengthening shoulders, elbows and wrists by washing the windows which will help with pencil control. In Music lessons this week they played a game where magic notes were placed on the line and in the space.
In Kindergarten the focus has been the letter q and they began the week with the story 'The Queen’s Knickers'. This provided much conversation about Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III and The Queen Consort, Camila. Girls enjoyed looking at a selection of coins where they could see images of Queen Elizabeth and they are now on the look out for any new coins with King Charles II displayed on them! This provided everyone with the opportunity to have a go at counting small groups of coins in the classroom. Another mathematical focus was looking at quarters and they discussed so many things that could be cut into quarters which included pizzas and pancakes! The children were also able to cut different shapes into quarters which they managed with growing accuracy.
As ducks make a lovely 'quack' sound they researched and used books to find out more about the life cycle of a duck. This also gave the opportunity to use the traditional song 'Five Little Ducks' to introduce the children to number bonds to 5.
The 'pets' in Reception have been spoilt this week. The girls made sparkly pet collars for them and also made a pet passport. They wrote a 'super sentence' inside each passport describing something unusual about their pet and are very proud of their writing in Reception. They are continuing to learn their digraphs and different ways of spelling them too.
In Mathematics, girls continue to learn about subtraction and they created a new class song this week to help them to remember number bonds to five. They read a pictogram of their favourite animals too and discovered that the most popular one was the rabbit!
In the outdoor area, the sunshine gave the perfect time to make sun catchers which glisten on the trees they hang from. Girls took great delight in using the sparkly glitter and gems available to decorate them and they can be enjoyed in the Westbourne gardens by everyone.
