Musicians marvel at annual spring concert
31 March 2017
The musical ensembles of Senior School and Preparatory School gave their annual concert on Tuesday 21 March. The event involved approximately two hundred girls performing in a wide range of ensembles, and the student tech and lighting team.
Prep ensembles performed a mixture of choral and instrumental pieces from the theme tune to the Flintstones and an extract from Matilda, ‘Revolting Children’. The Preparatory School’s guitar ensemble opened the concert with an upbeat rendition of ‘I wanna be like you’, arranged by Edgbaston High School’s guitar tutor, Miss Larner.
The Senior Ensembles presented some extremely challenging repertoire including ‘Cantique de Jean Rachine’ by Gabriel Fauré and extracts from John Williams’ famous film score for Star Wars. The concert featured the first performance given by the school’s Swing band directed by Mr Meadows, performing two pieces, ‘Blue Moon’ by Rodgers and Hart and ‘Dry Bones’ arr. Meadows.
The final item in the concert was a collaboration between the Prep and Senior choirs, presenting an inspiring and powerful performance of ‘One Voice’, Manilow, including soloists and four choirs from Years 3 – 13, numbering over 180 performers. This performance was even more significant as it was the final performance of the Choirs under the direction of Suzzie Vango. Miss Vango has directed the choirs at EHS for many years and has ensured that the high level choral tradition continues at the school. In a touching tribute to her work, the massed student choir performed one of her own compositions ‘Stand Next to Me’ as a sign of gratitude for all that she has done! We wish Miss Vango the very best in her new position as Head of Vocal Studies at Bromsgrove School.
