Year 10 girls meet the Earl of Wessex
13 May 2016
On Thursday 5 May, we travelled with Mrs Parsons to Birmingham City Football Club to present our DofE project. We were very excited but nervous to be meeting His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex later that day.
We arrived at the football stadium at around 8:30am, with plenty of time to set up our project. Three other schools also arrived for the competition. We were then spoken to as a group by the Head of DofE, who introduced himself and the judges. Afterwards, we were split into four groups, with groups 1 and 2 taken on a tour of the football pitch (where a match was being played by two college teams). Here we learnt various facts about the pitch, such as its dimensions, and we even got to sit in the dug-out and in the VIP box!
After the tour we returned to the room, where our project work was judged by five judges who asked us questions about our work. We then prepared to meet His Royal Highness at 12.15pm and we were able to have a brief conversation with him, before being re-seated in the VIP section to eat lunch.
Following this, prizes were awarded to different teams by His Royal Highness, according to the judges’ feedback, and we both achieved a certificate of participation.
This opportunity was really interesting and one we will remember, so thank you to Mrs Parsons for accompanying us and to Mrs Griffiths for providing us with the opportunity.
