Awards Ceremony Celebrates Academic Excellence

14 October 2016

On Friday 30 September, Senior School held its annual Awards Ceremony. In the presence of invited guests the school celebrated the academic achievements of pupils in Years 7-10 during the year 2015-2016.

Prizes for Outstanding Academic Achievement were awarded to pupils who had performed particularly well in their end of year examinations.

Certificates for Achievement in Individual Subjects were awarded to pupils who had shown a considerable aptitude and sustained enthusiasm for particular subjects.

Certificates for Progress were given to those pupils who, as evidenced by the school database, had made the most progress during the course of the academic year.

Certificates for Effort were awarded on the basis of staff nomination to those pupils who staff felt had worked consistently hard during the whole year.

Although the main focus of the afternoon was, undoubtedly, a celebration of the many academic achievements of our pupils, we also took the opportunity afforded by the occasion to showcase and enjoy the wider talents of our students in a variety of musical and dance performances.

Caitlin Kisumba (Year 8) gave a moving and accomplished violin performance of ‘The Theme from Schindler’s List’ by John Williams. We were then treated to an exciting dance performance by Ava Bowker, Ellie McGuiggan-Smith and Georgia Mafoh-Hoare (Year 11). Their dance, which was entitled ‘Off Balance’, had been choreographed by our current Year 12 Dance Scholar, Ruby Abbas. Head Girl, Bethany Lucas then took time out from her certificate presentation duties to give us a flawless vocal performance of ‘What Good Would the Moon Be?’ by Kurt Weill from his ‘American Opera’. Bethany first sang for us at this occasion when she was in Year 7 and it was lovely to hear her perform one last time in this same formal setting.  This most enjoyable occasion was concluded with a virtuosic piano performance by Mila Manandhar (Year 10) of ‘The Dance of the Watergrass’ by MingXin Du.

Congratulations to all of the award winners and grateful thanks to all who contributed towards the staging of this event. We now look forward to celebrating the successes of this academic year.
