Musician of the Year gives guitar recital
31 March 2017
On Friday 24 March, Emma Khan, Musician of the Year 2016, gave a lunch time guitar recital in the Octagon to a large audience of students and guests.
These performance platforms are intended to give our most advanced performers an opportunity to perform in a recital situation and present a varied programme in public performance.
Emma presented a programme of solo, duet and ensemble repertoire supported by Guitar tutor Miss Larner and the School’s Senior Guitar Ensemble with Nisha Ark, Eve Newland and Anya Avasty. The recital began with a virtuoso duet called ‘Rondo Rodeo’ which really captured the energy and ideas of a rodeo complete with bucking broncos, farmyard noises and a honkey-tonk piano, all sounds created by a range of extended techniques on both guitars.
Emma and the Senior Guitar ensembles presented a range of repertoire from Spanish-inspired music by Ian Gimmie to the Beatles’ iconic piece, ‘Yesterday’. Solo highlights included ‘Un Dia de Noviembre’ by Leo Brouwer, a very moving piece and music that had significant personal meaning to Emma as it was this piece that her mother would play to her as a child and what inspired her to learn the guitar.
The concert ended with a fireworks display, ‘Sunburst’ by Andrew York. An extremely challenging and exciting piece executed superbly, showing the huge range and versatility of the guitar and demonstrating Emma’s highly developed musicianship.
I would like to thank Emma, Miss Larner, Nisha, Eve and Anya on behalf of the Music Department of Edgbaston High School for this wonderful recital.
