Inspiration at Design Exhibition
05 July 2013
On Saturday 29 June, seven of the GCSE Textiles students, together with Mrs Mooney and Mrs Lampard, met at New Street station at 7:45am and departed for the New Designers Exhibition, Islington, London, an event which showcases innovative emerging design.
We arrived at the exhibition at 10am and looked around for a couple of hours. Whilst we were there we saw work which had been designed and made by Graduate students from many different universities. These included woven and knitted fabrics, prints, manipulated fabrics and wallpapers, all of which were created using many different techniques and effects to create a wealth of wonderful products. We were inspired by the talent there and this made us really excited about the opportunities to design in the future.
Whilst we were there we also had the opportunity to talk to some of the students about their work, what inspired them, their time at university and what made them choose to study textile design.
After we visited New Designers we went to the fabric shops in Soho where we discovered different fabrics and collected a few samples. Visiting these shops gave us some ideas of fabrics and components which we could use for our garments in Year 11.
In the afternoon, we visited the iconic London shop, Liberty, and admired the architecture of the old building and the wonderful garments on sale. Before we left the West End to go home, we had a chance to visit the biggest Topshop in the world and most of us came out with a purchase - or two!
Overall, we all thoroughly enjoyed the trip which gave us inspiration for our coursework in Year 11 and made us want to carry on with Textiles in the future.
Thank you to Mrs Mooney and Mrs Lampard for taking us on this trip; we would love to visit again.
