Senior School Sports Tour to Venice
10 June 2016
On the Sunday of half term, 30 girls from Years 8, 9 and 10 gathered at Birmingham airport to start the much anticipated 2016 Sports Tour. After arriving at Venice airport late on Sunday evening, the girls got as much rest at the hotel in Jesolo as possible, preparing for the 2 days of sport ahead.
The first day consisted of a demanding netball training session on the outskirts of Venice, with the guest coach Lisa who had previously trained at national standard level in the Canada, as well as the UK. This was enjoyed by all girls and a relaxed lunch, and free time at the nearby beach, helped to revive everyone afterwards. Soon the girls were off again to take part in their first hockey match of the tour. For many it was their first time playing on a water-based astro but everyone played superbly against the tough opposition. The final score was a draw against the Italian team. Tired and worn out, the girls all enjoyed a pasta dish supplied by the sporting venue and returned to the hotel.
Day 2 consisted of more netball training. First, the girls took part in training clinics in small groups to work on technique. A shooting competition took place and joint winners were Louisa and Amreece. An overall loser was also awarded to our very own Mrs Batchelor. After a short break, everyone played matches against each other in a tournament, providing an opportunity to practice and combine the skills learnt that day. The winners, the 'Italian Stallions' were crowned victors. After this, more well-deserved time was spent at the beach, soaking up the Italian sun. In the afternoon, the girls boarded the coach and drove to their second hockey match. This match was against the fourth best team in Italy but the girls were not disheartened. All players played exceptionally well throughout the match, many playing their best game ever and did EHS proud.
The third day came with amazing weather and the girls and staff set off to visit Venice. Girls enjoyed periods of free time to look around and enjoy the local atmosphere. A ride on the gondolas was much enjoyed by everyone and provided a new way to see the famous city. Lunch was spent at the the Hard Rock Cafe, an EHS favorite. After an amazing day the girls retuned back to the hotel to enjoy tradition Italian pizza and a treat of ice cream in the local town.
The final day was spent at Aqualandia, the water park in Jesolo. The girls had an enjoyable day spent on the many rides and slides in the sun. The weather was in our favour and the girls were sad to be leaving the following day. That evening awards were given out congratulating all girls on their efforts. Prizes were awarded for Hockey, Netball, Most Improved and Heather Crombie was named Tour Captain.
The following day started with an early wake up where the girls departed from the hotel. A sad goodbye was given to the wonderful tour guide Marco who had been a huge hit with all the girls and a great asset on tour.
The trip was a great success; a big thank you to all involved.
