Year 9 Cooking Masterclass with Mr Wootton
04 March 2016
As part of their assessment for Food & Nutrition in Year 9, the girls have to research, plan and cook suitable meals for the school lunch menu. Initially, Mr Wootton, our school Catering Manager, gave a talk to each form about how he caters for nearly 1,000 lunches everyday as well as a variety of functions held every week at EHS (from parents’ evenings to Sixth Form end of term meals and EHS Old Girls’ dinners). The girls then carried out further research and produced a report on school lunches. They also planned and cooked two dishes and the 12 best recipes were selected.
The 12 girls who were shortlisted for this School Lunch Competition met in the Food and Nutrition Room on Tuesday 1 March and were treated to a demonstration by Mr Wootton. He had chosen Hannah Foy’s Chickpea and Spinach Curry. The girls were shown some nifty knife skills and discussed how to multiply a recipe successfully for large-scale cooking.
When it came to tasting; first we tried the recipe without salt and although the spices made it tasty it was better with a little more seasoning. The final dish with a garnish of chopped coriander and accompaniment of yogurt and naan bread was delicious and enjoyed by all.
We would like to thank Mr Wootton for an interesting and tasty demonstration and look forward to him joining us for a similar session with the second half of the year group next term.
