Digital Literacy Awareness Day

Senior School

17 November 2017

On Monday 13 November, Mrs Campbell led a Digital Literacy awareness day. Year 7 were joined by Year 6 in the Octagon for a day full of interactive activities which enabled the girls to think about their day-to-day internet use.

A range of focus areas were discussed including the manipulation of images and how they as internet users are leaving a digital footprint and how this could impact on their future. Girls’ also had an opportunity to explore their use of emojis whilst trying to come up with their own.

Teams made up of both Year 6 and Year 7 girls were set the challenge of creating a short film using the animation programme ‘Stop Action’, as part of a National competition aimed at raising awareness of digital safety. Armed with a cardboard box full of items such as pipe cleaners, googly eyes, plasticine, string and a mountain of glittery writing utensils, team leaders (identifiable by their bold hats) directed their groups to create and shoot a film. Groups had great fun creating voices to add onto their animations while some devised posters promoting their safety campaigns.

After school, Mrs Campbell then held the first in a series of talks for parents, with the aim of exploring ways in which they can support their children in their internet use.
