One of many highlights of the Year 6 enrichment curriculum is the annual visit from the Medical Mavericks team. They returned for their eighth year at EHS this week!  

Avneet, a medical student from the University of Birmingham, trained our girls to become master phlebotomists using an infrared vein scanner to identify blood vessels under the skin and to practise drawing blood on Andy the Arm. The girls were suitably proud when they successfully drew 'blood' and excited at the prospect of training to be real phlebotomists when they reach 16! (Although they made it clear this would be a part time job as they continued their studies!).

The pathology goggles were very popular. These allow wearers to empathise with those who have tunnel vision, double vision, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration. After attempting to walk, write and tie their shoelaces wearing the pathology goggles the majority felt the most difficult visual impairment to live with was tunnel vision.

Our girls also thoroughly enjoyed measuring their oxygen levels, blood pressure and heart rate, taking an ECG, watching their muscles move through ultrasound technology and listening to their blood flow through their veins using a pulse-Doppler radar, to name just a few amazing activities we crammed into the workshop!

Each girl took away a copy of their own ECG trace, an inspirational poster about the over 350 NHS careers open to them in the future and great memories of an amazing workshop.
