A Jewellery Making Experience
14 June 2024
Year 6 pupils participated in a fantastic Jewellery Making workshop, hosted by the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, as part of their enrichment programme. The workshop focused on the ancient crafts of chasing and enamelling, providing a hands-on learning experience that was both fun and educational.
Chasing, one of the oldest techniques in silversmithing and goldsmithing, involves the use of a hammer and various chasing punches to create intricate designs and give volume to a sheet of metal. The girls enjoyed the rhythmic sounds of hammers tapping away, echoing throughout the building as they crafted their brass pendants.
In addition to chasing, the girls also learned the art of enamelling, an ancient technique of melting powdered glass onto metal. This process requires precision and patience, as the powdered glass must fully fuse with the metal to create the vibrant designs. The results were each unique, with handcrafted necklaces, bracelets and keyrings produced.
This workshop was not just about creating pieces of jewellery; it was an opportunity for our pupils to develop new skills and appreciate the craftsmanship involved in these age-old techniques. This enriching experience has certainly left an impression on our Year 6 girls, inspiring creativity and an interest in craftsmanship.
