Animals in Hand
14 June 2024
Westbourne girls enjoyed a very informative visit from Animals in Hands this week.
Mo brought a range of animals for the girls to look at, touch and hold. The first animal that was introduced was Milkshake the Mexican milk snake, which had lovely red, white and black stripes. Secondly, there was Pascal the Chameleon. He had beautiful colours on him including a bright blue stripe down his back. The children had to make sure that he was happy otherwise he would turn black with orange spots! Luckily he was very happy to come and say hello to the Westbourne girls!
Next we met Charlotte the Mexican red kneed tarantula. The children were very brave and chose to hold Charlotte either in their hands or on their heads! They learnt that when tarantulas are scared they rub their back legs together which send little hairs flying into animals’ eyes and then they run away!
The girls were very pleased to meet Bandit the ferret, who enjoyed using his nose to investigate our hall, he was very quick too! There was also Shadow the long haired rabbit who was very, very fluffy. He was so fluffy that you could not see his eyes, but he could see everything that was going on! The children learned that rabbits’ teeth never stop growing so it is important to eat lots of hay to keep them filed down.
Trevor the tree frog caused some amusement as he found it very hard to sit still, he enjoyed jumping and leaping out of hands! Finally, there was Dobbie the owl, a definite favourite with the girls. They were interested to learn that nocturnal owls have dark eyes while owls who are active in the day time have orange or yellow eyes!
There was lots of discussion in the classrooms after the visit as children shared the facts they learned and discussed their favourite animals.
