This Week in Westbourne
03 May 2024
This week’s theme is Nursery has been triangles and pyramids. The girls have made triangles from sticks and bricks, swept confetti into triangle shapes and played the triangle in groups along to music.
They have also used different sized triangles to make a collaged pizza slice and have printed using triangles. Pyramids were from the waffle bricks and the girls also decorated a pyramid net and tried to put it together (with a little help!)
Nursery have enjoyed being outside too where they have been practising ball skills - kicking in particular and we have been practising throwing and aiming skills by trying to get the beanbags into the hoops. In the outdoor classroom, they went on a bear hunt and then had to sort each bear found by colour and putting it onto the correct coloured bear shape.
There has been a rumble in the jungle in Kindergarten this week as children have explored the letter 'j'. Having listened to the story 'Rumble in the Jungle' girls were encouraged to talk about their favourite animals and why they liked them. They were challenged to write some jungle facts and draw some jungle animals! They also enjoyed discussions around the traditional story 'Jack and the Beanstalk.' This gave some opportunities to explore measurements in numeracy as they had to create multilink towers to match varying heights of beanstalks. They then compared the beanstalks using mathematical language. They have also been looking carefully at jellyfish! Girls have worked hard on their letter formation and even made a jellyfish in the shape of a J!
J is for jumping and so every opportunity to jump was taken! Jumping in the playground, jumping into the swimming pool and also jumping from raised surfaces in their PE lessons in Prep Hall! A quieter activity involved the children making their own jigsaw puzzles. They carefully thought of a design, drew it, cut out their puzzles pieces and then put them all back together. They are looking forward to taking their jigsaw puzzles home to challenge their families!
Reception pupils have had a very vibrant and imaginative week. In French, they made rainbows to help to remember colours. In 'topic' work, they painted colourful animals of their choice and the animals in the 'Dear Zoo' story and made vivid colour wave patterns to brighten up the walls. They also decorated their pet beds using tissue paper and paper flowers. Outside they continued the ‘Creatures Great and Small’ topic by making bird feeders for Westbourne garden.
The Creative Writing lesson needed to be extended this week as the girls just could not stop writing! They do love the story of Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell and this enthusiasm was reflected in the amount written on paper! Well done girls!
In Mathematics, they learnt the new word 'capacity' and demonstrated their understanding by measuring differing amounts of coloured water into a jug to show 'full', 'nearly full', 'half full', 'nearly empty', and empty!
