This Week in Westbourne
24 May 2024
This week in Nursery the girls have been looking at semi-circles and hemispheres, pentagons, hexagons and octagons. They celebrated World Bee Day on Monday by making bees out of pinecones in the outdoor classroom. They also learned a waggle dance where the bees show each other the way to the flowers in a figure of eight movement. Picking up the bees with tweezers and putting them into the hexagon shaped honeycomb helped put fine motor skills to good practice.
Art activities included looking at rainbows and painting their own and tracing shapes on the interactive table and the iPads. Time was also spent looking at coins and counting their sides and then making coin rubbings using the metallic crayons.
Kindergarten children have been enthusiastic this week in thinking of words that begin with y! They came up with unusual words like yak, yacht and yolk which gave many opportunities for discussion during carpet time. They talked about ways in which you can find out more information for example, using a dictionary, using google on the computer and also asking our friends!
In numeracy lessons, they have been looking at the composition of 5 using yellow and red counters and some girls have started to retain their number bonds to 5. They also completed some subtraction work using yellow objects.
Balanceability lessons this week were very successful with a further five children progressing on to pedal bikes! We are excited to see more girls achieving this after the half term break.
Reception pupils produced some interesting work in Creative Writing this week. They listened to the story of The Pig in The Pond by Martin Waddell and wrote their own version of events. They used their own ideas confidently showing creativity and originality in their work as well as a good phonics understanding and sentence structure. Reception played some games to celebrate National Numeracy Day and applied skills they have been learning.
On Wednesday we welcomed girls who are joining Reception in September by having a 'Taster Morning' for them. Current Kindergarten girls played with future Reception girls. They had a great time making hot air balloons and dolls made out of wooden spoons. Afterwards, they played in the Vet's area of the classroom.
In the afternoon, in the Topic lesson, girls used their artistic talents to express their ideas by making collage farms. They worked with a partner, first discussing the layout and then what kind of animals were on their farm. They set about making the animals, people and scarecrows. Some made tiny trees with green leaves, small ducks with orange beaks, a tap for the pig for when he is in the pond, gates so the animals could not escape and many more!
Well done girls, what a productive week!
