Year 13 RS Trip to Bournville’s Serbian Church

A-Level Religious Studies gives students the chance to explore faith beyond the classroom. Recently, Year 13 RS students visited the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Prince Lazar in Bournville to gain firsthand insight into Orthodox Christian worship. Carmen, a Year 13 RS student, shares her experience.

“On the afternoon of Wednesday 29 January, the Year 13 A-Level RS students and Mr Wiggins travelled from school to the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Prince Lazar, in Bournville.

The church was originally built to provide a place of worship for Serbs expelled from their home country, due to the rise of Communism after World War Two. It hosts a small Serbian-English population in weekly worship sessions, but at Easter they welcome a diverse South-Eastern European community, with members coming from Greece, Romania and Bulgaria.

We were kindly greeted by our guide Nikola Tis’ma who showed us around the church where we were instantly stunned by the beautiful blue ceilings and walls of the church, which were painted with various saints and Bible scenes, such as the disciples meeting with Jesus, and the angels surrounding the Christ child.

Nikola was an excellent guide, pointing out various features such as the icon of the three hundred hands, as well as other icons of the Virgin Mary, which will be useful to our studies on the varieties of church worship, and creative expressions. We were then shown around the church hall, before saying our final goodbyes and heading back to school, just in time for the end of the day.”
