A Day of Poetic Inspiration
11 October 2024
Our celebration of National Poetry Day on 3 October was a resounding success. The entire Senior School gathered for an assembly that featured an inspiring guest appearance by Matt Windle, former Birmingham Poet Laureate and Commonwealth Boxing Champion. Matt captivated the audience with his personal journey and passion for poetry, while also showcasing the power of words in unexpected ways.
The highlight of the assembly included performances by two of our talented students, Sarah S (Year 9) and Auria A (Year 8). Sarah performed her thought-provoking poem, "I Married the Sun at Noon," while Auria delivered a stirring rendition of "A Book." Both young poets presented their work with confidence and left the audience moved by their creativity.
Matt Windle later led workshops with Years 9 and 10, which were both enlightening and engaging. In these sessions, Matt performed two of his own poems, "When Flowers are Gone" and "Invisible Bridge," and encouraged thoughtful discussions about the themes and meanings behind the words. Students impressed Matt with their insightful, spontaneous questions, demonstrating their growing appreciation for poetry.
The newly re-purposed Year 11 common room, Base 25, provided the perfect setting for these reflective workshops. Matt also shared what led him to embrace poetry and how it can
resonate with people from all walks of life. The assembly and workshop were events to remember and allowed students to connect with the beauty and depth of poetry.
