An Out of This World Experience

Preparatory

06 December 2024

On Thursday, the Prep Hall transformed into a hub of excitement and wonder as an enormous mobile planetarium took centre stage.

Year Five pupils embarked on an incredible journey through space, exploring the planets, identifying visible celestial bodies in the night sky, and touring the International Space Station (ISS). The immersive experience included stunning enhanced images from the Apollo missions, sparking discussions that debunked common misconceptions about the Moon Landing. Although the Apollo mission happened decades ago, the session highlighted humanity’s current plans to return to the Moon and set sights on Mars.

Pupils were captivated by information about the rockets that will soon carry astronauts to Mars and beyond. Gasps of amazement filled the room as they watched the reusable Starship rocket booster caught by giant mechanical arms on its first attempt. The girls were equally enthralled by artist impressions of future Martian colonies, imagining what life might be like on the Red Planet.

This session offered a glimpse into a thrilling new era of space exploration. Who knows? Perhaps one day, some of our pupils will be among the pioneers helping to establish humanity’s first colony on Mars!

After lunch, Relaxation Club made the most of the dome’s tranquil atmosphere, enjoying a breathtaking video that showcased Earth from new perspectives. They were transported by images of swirling ocean currents, flowing clouds, and visits to Egypt, India, and the Caribbean, all narrated soothingly by astronauts—a truly peaceful and enriching experience.

Next, our friends from Woodgate Primary School joined in the adventure, spending an hour immersed in the wonders of the planetarium.

Finally, it was the turn of our youngest learners. Super-excited Kindergarten and Reception girls confidently showcased their knowledge by naming many planets in the Solar System. Their enthusiasm only grew as they marvelled at the twinkling stars of the night sky—a rare treat for those with early bedtimes!

Overall, it was a dynamic, memorable, and inspiring day for everyone involved. The mobile planetarium not only expanded our pupils’ horizons but also sparked their imaginations, leaving them eager for the next big step in humanity’s journey through the stars.
