Autumn Sporting Round Up

Senior School | Sixth Form

13 December 2024

The Senior School have had an exciting term with successes across a whole range of sports. In this term’s sporting round up, we are focusing on team sports and providing an update on some of our latest team news and achievements.

Netball
This term has been fantastic for netball, with a plethora of fixtures, tournaments and coaching opportunities. 46 girls have attended Year 7 Netball Club and they are beginning to form some excellent connections across the court.

Our U13 squad remains the most dedicated and have performed exceptionally well in the Sisters in Sport national competition, beating prestigious opposition such as Wrekin College. Many of our U14 and U16 squad who came on the South Africa Tour, embraced the opportunity to learn new skills and different playing styles, as a result, they have made an excellent start to the Kings Norton League and are showing more unity and team cohesion.

The U15s continue to shine, qualifying in 1st place at the Birmingham County Tournament at U16 level, they will now progress to regional finals in February. They also made history by reaching the semi-finals of the School Sports Magazine Cup; a level no team at EHS has reached before.

In the year that major changes were announced for the relaunch of the Netball Super League, the dream of becoming professional netballers is becoming more of a reality for some of our pupils. Isla Batchelor and Anaiya Plaha have been selected for the Nottingham Forest U17 NPL Squad and Luccia Baldwin has been selected for the Nottingham Forest U17 PDP Squad. We can’t wait to follow their progress!

Swimming
Swimming is now a powerhouse sport for Team EHS and we have strength in depth (excuse the pun) in all age groups. The girls' dedication to improving their strength, endurance, and technical skills is evident in their increasingly fast times across all disciplines and distances. It has been an excellent term for our Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors, all performed brilliantly at the English Schools qualifiers in Bromsgrove, with the junior team progressing to the national finals and finishing 14th-best relay team in the country.

In November, swimming captain, Poppy Couzens, swam her final races for school at the Warwick 100s gala. She is a wonderful advocate and has given her all, both swimming for, and coaching Team EHS. Tiffany Latham continues on her extraordinary swimming journey and recently took 3 seconds off her season’s best in the 200 fly at the Swim England National Winter Championships; incredible!

We look forward to lots of junior galas in the Spring term.

Hockey
Hockey is certainly stepping into the spotlight and we have had some phenomenal performances this term. A highlight must be Esme Du Croz in goal, keeping her team in the game with 4 incredible back-to-back saves. Another standout moment was Lydia Braham’s amazing reverse stick goal that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the Olympics!

Our U18s continue to lead the way, with many playing at club and county level. They have been the flagbearers of EHS Hockey for so long but their fun yet passionate approach to hockey has inspired a new generation, and our U15/U13 teams are now firmly following in their footsteps. The U13s most recent game ended in a 2-0 victory against King Henry’s where there were some excellent passages of play and strong connections formed in attack.

Football
Football continues to gather momentum at EHS and both our U13s and U15s have played in some exciting and closely fought matches. Many girls now play for clubs outside school, and Jemima Harlin is pushing forward on her journey toward professional football after being selected for Wolves and the ISFA (Read more about Jemima’s journey here).

Simran Bansal remains an exceptional leader, planning detailed weekly sessions for our U12 team and confidently referees their games. Her enthusiasm and love for football is infectious; she inspires our pupils and knows how to bring out their best. Could we be looking at the next Lionesses’ manager?

Squash
The newly formed EHS squash team entered the National Schools Squash Championships and faced Moreton Hall in the first round. The team of Siona, Zara, Fernella, Adela and Sriharshini competed fantastically, each winning their games. The atmosphere was so supportive, with more experienced members sharing tips and tricks with their peers. They are now through to the regional round and we wish them the best of luck!

Our first seed, Siona Mishra recently returned from the Polish Junior Open achieving an incredible bronze medal in the GU13 category.

Dance
This term, 18 dancers had the exciting opportunity to work with Midlands-based professional dance company, ACE Dance and Music, exploring a fusion of African and Contemporary movement enabling a cultural exchange through dance. They performed exceptionally in the ‘Create Perform Shine’ platform, and their performance was a credit to the hard work, resilience and passion they have poured into each workshop.

The EHS Dance Company have been working extremely hard this term, including weekly 7.30am training sessions in addition to their after-school commitments. They have shown great professionalism and artistry with everything they do and the future is certainly bright. We now look forward to The Great Big Dance Off 2025!

Life Saving
The girls returned to Lifesaving Club en masse with lots of new recruits ready and eager to learn. A group of girls completed the Bronze Star Pool Award, the first step towards the prestigious Bronze Medallion Distinction Award. Girls progress through a series of stages, each increasing in difficulty with regular assessments. Good luck on your journey, girls!

14 July 2024 marked 100 years since RLSS were given the Royal Charter and to celebrate this, the RLSS created a limited-edition award. The award includes simple lifesaving skills, based on the type of skills that were required in the RLSS award 100 years ago; that said the actual technical skill is very different, as I’m sure you can imagine! The girls demonstrated CPR and the recovery position as well as rescues, tows, and casualty recovery. Each of the girls completed these skills under assessment, earning a special certificate to recognise their hard work. All of the girls embraced these new skills (and sometimes difficult tows) giving it 100% effort.
In January we embark on the next stages of the Rookie awards and look forward to what 2025 will bring for the club.

Meet the Captains
The theme at our 2024 Sports Personality Awards was #SeeMeToBeMe, highlighting the value of role models and their unique ability to inspire and shape attitudes through their own visibility. I am delighted to announce this year’s Sports Captains, each outstanding ambassadors of their sports who will represent and empower our students.
