Crystal Creation by Year 7 Chemists
12 February 2016
Year 7 had fun separating rock salt, by first exploring simple techniques for separating mixtures including filtration and evaporation. First of all, they crushed the rock salt using a pestle and mortar to increase its surface area, then they dissolved the salt in water. To separate the salt solution from the undissolved rock, they filtered the mixture. The rock residue was left behind in the filter paper and the salt solution was collected as the filtrate. The girls then left the salt solution on the window ledge to allow the water to evaporate, creating beautiful salt crystals.
