Exploring Biodiversity at Bishops Wood
20 September 2024
Year 13 Biologists embarked on an exciting field trip this week to Bishops Wood Field Centre near Stourport-on-Severn.
The aim of the visit was to complete a practical for their A-Level studies by collecting data on the diverse species present at the site. This data is not only used for their studies but also contributes to the centre’s records, tracking changes in species around the site over the years.
Bishops Wood is dedicated to creating a site for significant improvement to biodiversity in the area, and so data on the management of the site is key. Our students’ data will be used to inform other areas across the country on how to manage and improve biodiversity efforts for all.
In addition to the required practical task, Year 13 girls explored a range of sampling techniques, including using quadrats and pond dipping. To their delight, they discovered a variety of insect and nymph species, including a dragonfly nymph, one of the pond’s apex predators, and a great crested newt—currently an endangered and highly protected species.
Thankfully, the weather held up for most of the day, allowing students to fully immerse themselves and learn about the management and importance of the ecology around us.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved!
