Honouring Remembrance Day
Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form
15 November 2024
Across the school, in both Prep and Senior, the school gathered for two very important assemblies, honouring those who served in the World Wars and reflecting on the significance of their sacrifices.
In the Octagon, the Senior assembly began with a moving performance of Ave Maria by the Chamber Choir. History scholars Charlie and Layla set the scene with General Eisenhower’s iconic D-Day message, marking the 80th anniversary of this significant event.
Year 11 student Niamh reflected on the unifying purpose of Remembrance, symbolised by the red poppy, while readings from Geraint Jones’s writings and firsthand accounts, including those of Joe Minogue and a wartime nurse, brought the human cost of D-Day vividly to life.
Musical performances, including the senior choir’s Remember Me and the Chamber Choir’s In Flanders Fields, deepened the impact of the assembly. Amy from Year 11 closed with the haunting memories of Marie Scott, a volunteer in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, before the playing of the Last Post and a minute’s silence offered a powerful moment of reflection.
Headmistress Mrs. Macro and student leaders led this solemn tribute, reminding everyone of the importance of not just remembering the past, but also the lessons it teaches us for the future.
Over in the Prep School, a thoughtful service was led by Miss Deacon and representatives from the History Club. This unique assembly used Roger Hargreave’s tale of Mr Forgetful to convey the importance of remembering. After a minute’s silence, Jessica, Deputy Head Girl of Prep, played Reveille on the violin to mark the end of the reflection.
Year 4 pupils took on the challenge of designing and decorating poppies using an array of collage materials. The poppies were then displayed around the doorway as a reminder of the day’s significance.
The spirit of remembrance was felt throughout the school, serving as a heartfelt tribute to those who came before us and reminding us of how fortunate we are.
