On Friday, Year 2 set off excitedly to go to Martineau Gardens. On arrival we were greeted by Denise and James who were our tour guides for the day. We started off in the gazebo where our day was explained to us. Then we separated into two groups. 2R went with Denise to explore the gardens, whilst 2S found out about plants and went to learn about the trees in the forest. We met back up for lunch and enjoyed playing on the amazing Pirate Ship before spending the afternoon doing the alternate activity.
With Denise the girls explored the wild meadow and searched for minibeasts, finding worms, centipedes, spiders and lots of woodlice! They brushed them carefully into their pots and used magnifying glasses to look at them in more detail. This is a lovely practical session following on from our Science topic this term, all about minibeasts. From there we looked at different plants and then moved on to the vegetable garden where the girls spotted lots of edible goodies and even got to try gooseberries, rhubarb and peas, as well as smelling different herbs. Some of the produce was enjoyed more than others, as the gooseberries were very bitter!
With James, the girls learnt about the different parts of a plant and why bees and butterflies and other flying minibeasts are so important to these plants. The girls enjoyed a fun demonstration from two of their classmates to support this learning, as they dressed up as a butterfly and a bee. Next stop was the woods to find out how to identify the different types of trees using their leaves. The girls all did very well identifying the different trees in the woods. Whilst walking around the woods we found out lots of facts about different minibeasts that lived there. The last stop of this session was to learn about the importance of compost. The girls all helped to sieve some compost which will be planted in the gardens to help the plants grow.
We returned to school after a fun day full of minibeast activities having all learned lots of new facts!
