Mum’s the Word for Pre-Prep and Prep

Preparatory

28 February 2025

There has been huge excitement in Pre-Prep and Prep this week as the girls, staff and some parents celebrated International Mother Language Day. As part of an off-timetable day, we started our day with an assembly about the importance of celebrating our linguistic diversity, where the girls wore traditional dress related to the country of a language that they speak at home or colours to signify their cultural heritage. The parents of Anna in Kindergarten, Eliza in Reception, Aethe in Year One, Jazi in Year Three, Madiha in Year Four and Zuli and Ceana in Year Six were invited into school to talk about their ‘mother language’ and the corresponding country/countries. They shared cultural items with a particular year group and even taught some of the girls to write their names using a different alphabet. Languages included Croatian, Patois, Polish, Sinhala, Farsi, Arabic and German. The girls were also invited to bring in an item from home that represents their culture for a ‘Show and Tell’ activity.

Other activities throughout the day involved learning songs in Finnish and Moldovan, learning how to tie a tie, taking a plane to Kingston, a dance from of the Massai and Kassa tribes in Tanzania, an Iranian dance, Arabic calligraphy and lots of research into the languages and countries of our parent helpers. One of the highlights had to be the decorated individual created by every girl in Prep to represent the country of the language they had learnt about and the Pre-Prep globe, all produced for an elaborate display of EHS diversity to be exhibited in Prep Hall.

With a lunch themed upon various countries around the world, complete with flags to highlight the origin of the food served, the day truly was a wonderful celebration of what not only makes us unique, but also all that unites us. Happy international Mother Language Day!
