A Love of Literature at EHS
28 February 2025
Literature is more than just a subject—it is a passion that runs through the heart of our academic community. Throughout the year, the English Department brings books to life with a wide range of activities that celebrate the power of words, from poetry slams to special assemblies honouring literary greats.
Most recently, students gathered for an assembly dedicated to the works of Angela Carter, a pioneering voice in women’s literature. The event was a chance to delve into her vivid storytelling and lasting impact on the literary world.
Beyond the classroom, EHS students are also engaging in national literary discussions. Last week, Year 10 and Year 12 students took part in the GSA Book Club, a virtual forum that connects pupils from schools across the country—including Tudor Hall, Queen Mary's (Yorkshire), and Abbot’s Hill. The students have chosen their next reads—George Orwell’s 1984 for Year 10 and Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar for Year 12—before reconvening in March to discuss their thoughts and select their next titles.
Millie, a Year 12 English Literature scholar, spoke about the value of the experience:
"The GSA Book Club is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other like-minded A-level students who have a passion for English Literature and reading. The experience will enrich our knowledge of a variety of different books and will provide an insight into the depth behind the author's life and the period that it was set in."
With so many opportunities to engage with literature, EHS continues to foster a love of reading, discussion, and literary exploration. We look forward to seeing how these cross-school conversations develop in the coming months.
