It never ceases to amaze me how industrious our girls are, and this week has been no exception. The entire school has returned, after the half term break, well-rested and with a renewed passion for learning. I joined a fantastic Year Three History lesson this week. The girls have been learning about Boudica and their knowledge and understanding was impressive. However, what I was incredibly proud of was the thoughtful questioning that was in evidence during the lesson. Our girls are not prepared to take information at face value, they want to understand why. They are not afraid to ask questions, or to make mistakes and I believe this is due to the nurturing environment created by my incredible team of staff. Staff want to inspire the girls and to provide opportunities for them to immerse themselves in their learning so that it is relevant.
This was evident, earlier in the week, when staff arranged a trip for our Year Six girls to visit the Lapworth Museum at the University of Birmingham. This is a hidden gem of a museum, right in the heart of the University. It is a small but mighty museum, crammed with artefacts and was an inspirational learning opportunity for our Year Six pupils. The girls had the chance to demonstrate independent learning and to use their initiative to make the most of the trip, skills which will stand them in good stead as they move into Year Seven and beyond.
Next week is our assessment week. This is a chance for staff to find out how well the girls are able to apply their knowledge and understanding as well as for staff to identify any gaps. It is also a chance for the girls to become familiar with formal assessments, so that when it really counts, they are comfortable in this type of environment. We know that our girls are passionate about learning, but we also know that, in order to learn, mistakes will be made - both academically and socially. It is our role to give our girls the tools to navigate these challenges and to emerge braver and stronger than they might ever believe they could be.
Have a wonderful weekend.
