Nursery to Year Six Highlights

Preparatory

10 January 2025

This week, our Pre-Prep and Prep pupils have hit the ground running and immersing themselves in every aspect of the curriculum. The frosty weather has been inspirational for many areas of the school, but it has been lovely to see every girl aiming high and challenging themselves.

Jack Frost

In Nursery, we discussed the weather as we arrived and explored why it was like that. We then enjoyed reading the story ‘Here Comes Jack Frost’ by Kazuno Kohara. Afterwards, we headed to the outdoor classroom to observe the frost up close and investigate the changes it had caused to the grass, water, and other elements of nature.

Let it Snow!

Our Kindergarten girls have embraced the theme of Winter. For once, we have been pleased to see the wintery weather as it has reinforced our carpet time discussions about Winter! The children have enjoyed talking about their experiences of the cold snow, ice and frost. We have spent time reading lots of Winter books including The Snowman, Snow Friends and The Snowman and The Snowdog. Following this, girls have enjoyed creating their very own snowmen in the tuff tray using cotton wool, cannellini beans, blacked eyed beans and a selection of different sized spoons!

Role-play

Reception girls returned to school full of holiday news and excitement. It was clear from their chatter that they had missed their friends very much! Free flow activities on arrival in the mornings are when the girls can choose where to play and the role play area of the classroom is very popular, especially when catching up with friends. Girls take on different roles, such as a doctor, parent or shopkeeper allowing them to make sense of their experiences and practice problem-solving.  This was evident this week in Reception as they played in the new baby clinic.  Each term, as our topics change, we adapt the role play area into specific areas to help tailor their learning opportunities.

Playing with Patterns!

The girls in Year One have been learning all about repeated patterns in their Maths lessons. We took a cross curricular approach and linked it with their Art and play skills too. We challenged the girls to print repeated patterns using paints and organising toys ensuring there was a repeated pattern. All girls enjoyed the variety of activities on offer.

Snowflake Creations

Year Two girls have thoroughly enjoyed the recent snowfall, which inspired their beautiful snowman artwork. They began by decorating their snowmen, creating some truly amazing patterns. Using their cutting skills, the girls carefully cut each strip along the lines and then attached them carefully to card, leaving a space in between each one. To complete their designs, they added delicate snowflakes, adding to the winter charm of their creations. The girls did an incredible job and should be very proud of their imaginative winter masterpieces!

Roman Fruit Salad

Year Three have been exploring Roman food as part of their History lessons. Their task was to design their own Roman-style fruit salad. To begin, they evaluated two types of fruit salads, one made with tinned fruit and the other with fresh fruit, both from the supermarket. Then, using only fruits that would have been available to the Romans, they carefully designed their own fruit salads. The girls took time to chop the fruit and arrange it creatively. Afterwards, they evaluated their fruit salads, considering taste, texture and appearance, before enjoying their creations as the final task of the day!

Square Numbers

Year Four have immersed themselves in the first week back at school and it has been a busy one, full of interesting lessons. They have started square number and times tables practice in their Mathematics lessons.
