Nursery to Year Six Highlights
31 January 2025
Prep girls have enjoyed the Winter sunshine this week and have been busy demonstrating our EHS values across the school.
Paper Chain Snakes
In Nursery, we celebrated Lunar New Year with excitement and creativity! The girls brought in themed items from home, filling our space with the lucky colours of red and gold. We focused on snakes, as 2025 marks the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac. The girls made paper chain snakes and decorated snakes with finger painting, strengthening their fine motor skills.
Inspired by traditional ribbon dancing, the girls created their own flowing movements with ribbon wands. The tuff tray featured a red and gold sensory challenge, where the girls used chopsticks and tweezers to retrieve hidden objects from red noodles — a little tricky but fun!
Outside, the girls practised mark making Chinese letters and numbers in mud and then crafted beautiful lanterns with red and yellow tissue paper. It has been a fantastic week of learning, creativity, and fun! Happy Lunar New Year!
Lifelong Love of Books
Books and storytelling are often at the heart of what we do in Kindergarten. The girls very much enjoy listening to stories which helps them to develop their language, imagination and of course their lifelong love of books! It is lovely to hear the girls telling us stories and to hear them read their own books with enthusiasm, enjoyment and purpose! They can often be found sitting together sharing books with each other too!
Amazing Addition
Reception pupils have been diving into the exciting world of addition, where numbers come to life in fun and creative ways! From counting toys to solving simple problems, they have been building essential mathematical skills while discovering the magic of combining numbers. Their new Addition books are bright and colourful which has kept them engaged and motivated to learn. The girls have been very pleased with their achievements, especially when completing work independently. Addition has never been so amazing!
3D Detectives
Year One having been learning all about 3D shapes this week. They have been learning the names and looking at their properties. We challenged the girls to build using a variety of 3D shapes. The girls were so creative and built farms, rockets, castles, cake shops, hotels and even an ice cream van out of the variety of 3D shapes on offer. We have asked the girls to look around at home and be detectives to see what 3D shapes they can see in the real world.
Creative Caterpillars
Year Two have been exploring the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar through both Art and English. In Art, the girls first learned how to sketch their caterpillars, creating outlines with a pencil. Using a thin paintbrush they carefully painted their caterpillars. Their finished creations were fantastic! In English, they worked in small groups to plan and retell the story, before performing it to the class using some props. They all did an amazing job! Next week the girls will write their own version of this story, with creative twists.
Animation Experts
Year Three girls have been busy working on a creative project in Computing, using the iMotion app on iPads to create short stop-motion animations. They animated a person waving by capturing a series of images, making small adjustments to the character's arm position with each shot to show the motion of the wave. Each frame was carefully planned and adjusted, allowing the girls to see the gradual movement come to life as they played the sequence. Pupils enjoyed the challenge of capturing the fluidity of movement through their digital creations.
As they worked with iMotion, they discovered how animation works, learning how a sequence of still images can create the illusion of motion. The girls also watched the first Disney animation, Steamboat Willie, which gave them a deeper appreciation for the art of animation. It was a fun and engaging activity that helped them develop both their technical skills with the app and their understanding of animation principles.
Year Four Take on Tudor Architecture
In December, the Year Four pupils performed a fantastic play all about the Tudors. This term, they have developed their learning further by finding out about how the Tudors developed markets, houses and clothing. Demonstrating creativity and perseverance, the girls made a flat 2D piece of paper turn into a posh Tudor mansion with a chimney, windows and a garden. They collaborated to create a small village showing a farming community. Great fun and hard work! Well done girls!
Fabulous Fables
Year Five have been busily writing their own Fables this week. Thinking of suitable characters to learn a lesson and then developing the story around a moral. There are some fantastic results, displayed for all to see. Some groups are excitedly planning to act their fables in Assembly next week and we are looking forward to sharing the results of our hard work.
Spring Snowdrops
In Year Six, we have embraced the beauty of spring in our art lessons. The girls have been using watercolours to paint seasonal flowers, including daffodils,
snowdrops, and bluebells. They have been refining their skills with specialist techniques such as blending to create soft transitions between colours and washes to build
delicate, layered backgrounds. Through careful observation and practise, they have captured the vibrant yet subtle tones of spring blooms. The results are stunning, and we
look forward to displaying their artwork around the school to celebrate the changing season!
