News From the Head of Prep
31 January 2025
This week, many of our pupils have celebrated the Lunar New Year. Talking to the girls about their plans for this celebration filled me with great joy. Chinese New Year is a time for family, food and fresh start; a chance to welcome in new opportunities, prosperity and happiness and it struck me that there are lessons for us all to learn from these traditions. So often we find ourselves in a habitual routine, it is a safe place to be, and we know how it works. However, recognising our mistakes, learning from these and embracing new opportunities is so important. At EHS Prep, we want to prepare our girls for future success. We do this by providing a safe and supportive environment, one where it is OK to make mistakes (to grow our brains!) and we encourage girls to be curious learners.
This was clearly evident in the Year One classroom this week when I came across a group of excited pupils learning about their bodies. The wonderful Mrs Hobbs had carefully planned an engaging and interactive Science lesson for the girls. Whoops of delight could be heard as the girls used their iPads to ‘look inside’ their peers and discover their bones and internal organs. They proudly shared with me their newly learnt scientific vocabulary and had clearly made a huge amount of progress over the course of the lesson. It was wonderful to see such curiosity in evidence.
Doris and Amelia helped me lead a special Lunar New Year assembly on Tuesday and talked with great pride about their culture and traditions. We shared the story of how the Jade Emperor created the Chinese Zodiac by holding a swimming race for animals. As we say goodbye to the Year of the Dragon and we welcome in the Year of the Snake, I hope that our entire EHS community will welcome wisdom, transformation and personal growth.
Have a wonderful weekend.
