This Week in Westbourne
14 June 2024
This week Nursery have been looking at all things under the sea. They have made starfish collages, seahorse silhouettes by sponge painting and jelly fish with floaty legs.
They practised counting by looking at the number on the scallop shell and then counting out the correct amount of shells to put on them. Whilst doing this they put some of the shells to their ears to see if they could hear the sea! They also counted the spots on the fish and found the fish with corresponding numeral on it to stick on top.
Another activity included strengthening motor skills by using whisks to whisk some soapy water in the tuff tray to make sea foam.
It has been another busy week in Kindergarten with a focus on animals as it has been letter z for zoo! They enjoyed a visit from Animals in Hands and spent time afterwards in the classroom talking about the animals that came to visit. Girls tried hard to remember their names and discuss what they liked to eat and where they liked to live. They produced some lovely writing to express their favourite animals. Time has been spent practising the formation of the letter z, looking carefully to make sure they are pointy so not mistaken for s or 2! Children have created some stripy zebras in the shape of the letter z too.
In numeracy, girls have worked hard on their counting, substituting and number formation. Outside the classroom, Kindergarten are continuing to progress in their balanceabilty lessons as even more girls have transitioned onto bikes with peddles. Well done! The girls did very well in swimming this week too as they had to remain focused and make floating star shapes on both their backs and tummies!
We all remember happy memories of building dens as children so when Reception girls were offered the opportunity to build their own den outside, they jumped at the chance! We are so lucky to have our own outdoor classroom enabling us to do this.
Reception pupils also explored outside on Monday but this time they went on a Bug Hunt! Girls turned over stones to find a wonderful world of small creatures living underneath. They saw earwigs, worms, bees, flies, beetles and many more. The next step was to write about what they had found and draw pictures of their findings! Then they got the paints out and continued being creative by painting the bugs they had found.
In Mathematics the girls jumped on the ‘odd’ and ‘even’ bus! They learnt all about these numbers by making their own passenger bus. Afterwards they demonstrated their understanding by cutting and sticking different amounts of passengers in the right boxes on a worksheet. Reception girls were quick to compare analogue and digital times in topic work too and could demonstrate o'clock using their own analogue clock.
Reception welcomed new visitors during Open Morning on Thursday and were extremely pleased to show them their fabulous work and have them listen to our super readers!
