A Tudor Christmas

Preparatory

15 December 2021

Year 4 journeyed back in time and transformed the Octagon into the home of Lord and Lady Escelie who welcomed the audience to spend a typical Tudor Christmas with them at Selly Manor.

The servants in the house shared facts about the traditions of some Christmas decorations and about the considered healing properties of mistletoe and holly and how they thought these could protect the home. They also explained the making of pomanders to scent the house.

Food of course was important too and they had prepared a wonderful Christmas meal of boar’s head, peacock and a pie which had taken days to prepare. Inside was a turkey, stuffed with goose, stuffed with a chicken, stuffed with a partridge, stuffed with a pigeon.  Did you know that sprouts, a traditional vegetable at this time of year, were introduced by the Tudors?

Next came the entertainment in the grand house. There was dancing in the long gallery with the Pavane and an Almain and then Lord and Lady Escelie invited the mummers to perform the story of St. George and the Dragon.

Throughout the presentation the girls performed numerous traditional carols and poems together.  They had clearly worked very hard and had enjoyed the experience.
